    On the way down break at your hips first. Once the bar is past your knees break at the knees. Still keep the bar close to your body over the mid foot, even on the way down. You won't hit your knees anymore.

    I remember a thread about this very same issue maybe in Rip's Q&A where the guy argued until he was blue in the face that it was impossible to lower a deadlift in a straightish line without shearing your kneecaps off.
