Yes, exactly as described in the book - acceleration throughout.
It's only slow from the floor during the teaching phase, or when specifically coached for someone who is going squirrely and getting out of position - IOW, someone who is relearning the correct movement.
Today when I was doing the clean. I tried to excelerate bringing the bar off the floor to the jumping position and kept banging into the knees.
Is there a reason for this and what can I do about?

You're likely not extending the knees to get the bar off the ground and keeping the shoulders out over the bar.
Knee extension is what starts the bar off the ground, but people have a tendency to open the hips too soon and smack their knees with the bar.
