A friend of mine gets lightheaded during pin presses and presses. I was recommended at the Denver SS seminar to post a video to see if there's anything form wise that might be going on to cause it: video

He's leaving the bar in front of his shoulders at lockout, but I don't see how that would cause a blackout.

Thanks for taking a look. I'll let him know. Someone at the seminar mentioned that they were lightheaded and then started using smelling salts and that helped. I have no idea why that would help, but I don't think it would make things worse. Maybe we'll see how that works for him.

Is it only on pin presses he gets light-headed?

Pin presses and presses. Number of reps don't seem to matter much. Just the absolute weight.

Unrelated to lifting, I faint easily from postural syncope. Some people don't, some people do. It appears his knees are locked hard the entire time, that would send me into a haze quickly -just a theory.

An incorrect valsalva may also be part of the problem.

I've coached him in person, and we've confirmed multiple times he's taking his valsalva correctly.

Out of curiosity, does he also suffer from this during dead-lifting?

I’ve had that issue almost constantly since I started lifting. It’s was really bad on the first rep, but if I could stay composed, then the lightheaded dizzy feeling went away. Post COVID it’s entirely vanished, no idea why.
