Why do you think it should be vertical?
What would happen if you added weight between your feet vs hanging from your waist vs in a backpack?
The only thing wrong with these is that you pussed out on the last rep.
I think it's all the pictures (such as Figure 7-36 in the blue book) and videos I've seen that seem to show people more or less vertical. It just seemed inefficient to have my lower body out in front of me.
I'm assuming the location of the added weight would change my center of mass and affect how my body hangs. The backpack would probably move the COM furthest away from the bar and cause the most angle to my body.
Look at the video, and notice that the amount of your body's mass in front of and behind the bar are roughly the same. You're fine. Your abs are just working.
