You're getting tight by squeezing your ass cheeks before each rep and it's taking your back out of extension. Lift your chest before each rep, then breath and brace without squeezing your cheeks. Just close the back of your throat then exhale against the closed glottis, and that will cause the trunk to brace without much thinking.
Also, get your knees out more.
