Hi. I'm almost 50 y/o, and in my ~ten years of squatting I've had better and worse technique periods. Recently I've noticed that an ancient habit that I thought I got rid of has taken over me: in heavy sets, inside the 'hole' I slide the bar downward on my back 1-2 inches, spread my hands sidewards, and rise like that.
What's the explanation for this phenomenon, and what's it's fix?

I have a few thoughts. Do you have a video of this happening?

    No, I'm afraid I don't. I don't video myself at all.
My explanation for this is that after the voyage down, I make my way up easier for myself by shortening the moment arm between the bar and my center of gravity, hence using the same muscle mass as used on the way down - to do less work on the way up.

This just sounds like a control issue. Is there a weight at which you can consciously not let your hands move?

Yes, at about 80% of that weight I have a solid technique.

Without seeing video or coaching you in person, I would say that you should go back to the weight at which you can keep your hands still, and then work up from there.

I have had this issue too. For me, it was in the initial set up. I wasn't bracing tight enough on the un-rack, and consequently the bar was too high to begin with. Once in the hole the bar would roll down, likely in an effort to keep balanced.
