I have returned to it after a couple of years away and am struggling with technique, big time.

Mark, noted re footwear. I have had another read of the book and trawled through a lot of videos this AM, which resulted in the following attempt (with footwear):

This felt a lot better - I seem to have failed to finish the lift however.
Are you deadlifting in a pair of birkenstocks?
