After two years of training with barbells, I failed to break a 255 pound deadlift off the floor and was squatting about 145 for sets of 5 at a body weight of 165. Thanks to the tough love criticism of Mark Rippetoe (I read 'you're not doing the program') and others online, I've since squatted 315 for 3 sets of 5 and deadlifted 405 for 5 reps and have even hit 475 for a single at a body weight of 180 (so still sorta not doing the program in regards to body weight). All it took was a little 'you're weak as fuck' and 'a grown man who trains should be stronger than what you are' to get me started.
