Hi Bill, I just saw this now. I hope our sessions and correspondence have been valuable to you, and keep up the good work!

Great stuff Bill! I’m just starting strength training at age 58, and am also a cyclist. I’ve been looking for info about how to optimize training in both areas, looks like I’ll have to choose!

So...I'll persist for another month or so. If no progress by then, I'll submit to the medical profession to see what my doc might say. In the meantime, I'm back on my normal programming, though I've had to forego incline bench DB press accessory work because of the pain.
By way of update, the shoulder pain and reduced range of motion did not improve. After consultation with primary care physician in January and referral to a Physical Therapist, the working diagnosis is a torn labrum. This has been confirmed with an MRI as of two weeks ago. The immediate impact is that overhead presses are out to enable healing. I'm continuing progress on squat, bench and deadlift, though benching is "stuck" for now without the collateral training benefits from OHP. Limited to high bar squatting since low bar is not doable.

Next week I have a consult with the Orthopedic specialists to consider additional treatment options (beyond physical therapy). I'm not expecting them to recommend surgery, but I'll wait and see what they come up with.

Met with the Orthopedic doc. Short version of meeting is no surgery. Torn labrum basically won't heal, but inflammation from it will decrease. Recommended to continue Physical Therapy to strengthen stabilizer muscles for the shoulder and work to increase range of motion. Use pain as guideline for future movements (i.e. serious pain = stop doing whatever causes it). May be able to resume OHP as pain decreases/ROM increases. Uncertain as to whether Low Bar Squats are possible in the future.

FWIW, he was very complimentary on my pursuing weightlifting as an activity.

Yeah I think I'm pretty cool at 59 playing soccer, swimming and biking. I'm very inspired by your story and looking to start my program soon also. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Bill,

Try holding the stretches for just a two count and release.

I wonder if I will ever be able to do low bar squats. Kudos to you for being able to!

    starting strength coach development program
It's been a while so an update is appropriate. Recap: Male, age 73, height 6'4" tall, weight 245 lbs. Last competition was 10/27/2018 where my squat was 308 lbs, bench @ 215 lbs, DL @ 352 lbs, good for first place among masters lifters 50+ and was a MN state record for Masters 4a, 120kg weight class. From June, 2018 through the meet, I was well-coached by Ness Oszast, SSC. She has now relocated to Poland so the Twin Cities is again an SSC desert. I wish her well as she is working to help "spread the word" about SS in the EU. I'm now training with a non-SSC coach so we'll see how that goes.

Right shoulder (torn labrum) is holding up, but I'm still limited to high bar squats, though I've been able to resume OHP at lighter weights. Slow progress, eh! Last August, finally gave up on my neighborhood Anytime Fitness gym and switched to a real weightlifting-centric gym (Los Campeones in Minneapolis).
