I was fairly strong in high school since I did masonry, but I had never done weight training before. Fast forward a few years and I started "fooling around in the gym" as Rip says because I felt I needed to get some of that strength back in college where I had thinned down to about 160-165lbs (from 185 in high school). I made ok progress doing Bro Splits and then my first "competition" came up when some co-workers and I decided to do a Spartan race. I took training much more seriously, but was mostly doing just 1 compound, some assistance and then would run 3 miles at the end (even on leg days) of each day. Fast forward to after doing the second race which was over 8 miles and after I got back I decided to quit doing Spartan races because it just didn't fit me. I decided I wanted to focus on strength and had recently started watching Alan Thrall's videos for form mainly and came across his video on the books he likes and SS was the first one on his list. At the same time I had recently moved across town and joined a powerlifting/strongman gym where I still did my bro splits for about a month before I decided to switch to SS, noticing the big dudes in the rack room were not doing tricep pressdowns as much as me. Anyway, here's my rough stats when I started SS.
