I’m doing a three week cycle of heavy – light program per the Barbell Prescription book. Week three is five heavy singles for the heavy day and I had my first session last night with heavy press and light bench. I didn’t know what weight to start at and so just picked a weight found out it was too easy added two pounds for the next one and so on for five singles. I now know to pick a heavier weight the next time this comes around. However I seem to do better at these for the first set of one at a weight that’s slightly lighter than what I can max at. Is that defeating any progress or is it okay to pyramid these singles? What tends to maximize progress? Or is this it’s different for everyone kind of thing?
