Which one do you think is the best for building size and strength?

A: Bulgarian split squats w. dumbbells
    or
    B: Lunges w. dumbbells

or other "variations" (walking lunges, reverse lunges)?

This is not a troll post.
I don't really care about how "functional" these exercises are. It's just supposed to be a tool to build some leg muscle while my back heals up. These are the only freeweight exercises that don't hurt me.
The idea is to eventually max out the dumbbell stack plus chains around the neck. I can do proper incremental loading with my sandbags.
I'd work with something like 3×6-8, 3 times a week, running a LP.

lunges or step ups onto a box.

To me, bulgarian split squats seem too balancey.

Where as lunges or steps up onto a box I seem to be able to use more weight and work harder (and incur more stress).

Yeah this jives with my experience too. I have done BSS/RFESS quite a bit and I always have problems keeping my body in the right position, whereas I have had lunges and stepups programmed pretty regularly and they're a lot easier to maintain balance even with fairly heavy dumbbells in each hand. Side benefit - you can do them for higher reps and get some conditioning in with them too.
