Meet Report NASA Iowa State Meet April 2, 2022

I competed in men's equipped (single ply) open powerlifting at 242 lbs. I weighed in at 241 lbs the night before- a pretty easy cut from 246 lbs a couple of days earlier. This was only my 2nd equipped meet and my 1st using this particular squat suit. I was nervous about using it as I had only had 6-7 sessions with that new suit and had yet to hit legal depth. Figuring I had pretty good odds of bombing out on squats so I also registered for equipped push pull just so I could keep lifting.

Squats- I attempted 240 kg (530 lbs) for 1st attempt. I was worried about hitting depth so tried to force myself deeper at the bottom. Unfortunately, I lost my groove and the suit pulled me to one side and I dumped the bar sideways. I tried to stay with it to help the spotters but eventually we had to just put it down altogether on the floor. Luckily I wasn't injured but it was a scary experience. I've missed squats before in competition but never anything like this. I reattempted 240 kg and got it on 2nd. I tried 255 (562 lbs) on 3rd and got it but was red lighted for depth. Some of the more experienced lifters thought I hit depth so it must have been pretty close.

Bench- I hit 190 kg for opener and missed 207.5 (457 lbs) for second attempt but then reattempted 207.5 successfully for new Iowa Men's Bench Record (only 2.5 kg over the previous record which was mine but a record is a record).

Deads- I deadlifted raw. I really dislike using the deadlift suit and was dead tired by this point anyway. The terrible 1st sqt attempt was exhausting and it carried over the rest of the day. I did 227.5 kg for a successful opener and then hit 250 kg (551 lbs) for 2nd attempt. I tried 405 kg (590 lbs) for last attempt but only barely got it off the ground- I was out of energy.

These weren't my best lifts for squat (20 lbs off last meet) and deadlift (34 lbs off last meet) and only a 2.5 kg improvement on bench. However, I knew using the new squat suit was iffy and at least I didn't bomb out. A few more weeks of working with the new suit will help a lot in the future.

New Programming- Bullmastiff by Bromley. I'm going to modify the programming by dropping one set per exercise. I turn 49 in early May and I just don't think I can otherwise handle all of the volume. Even so, it will be a shift towards lots more volume and lower weights than I've done in a while. I'm going to start the weights real light and use his formula to adjust it upwards.
