Gymnasts also have scrawny legs. Coach Sommer even admits that since his primary goal as a gymnastics coach is to get his boys as strong as possible in their upper bodies relative to their bodyweights, he does not include in his program exercises that induce significant lower body hypertrophy. He also posted pictures comparing an Olympic gymnast to Ivan Stoitsov and pointed out the marked difference in lower body size.
Still, there are many accounts of gymnasts who had never before touched a barbell and deadlifted 3.0x their bodyweights on their first tries. Coach Sommer writes in his BTGB book about a 135-lbs. 14-year old kid who pulled 435 with no prior lifting experience. Once you see a gymnast squat, however, the mystique wears off.
My (female) Oly teammate (who qualified for Nationals this year) can easily do strict ring muscle ups. I saw her do one last weekend. My (male) Oly coach could also do them, although I'm not sure that he has tried recently. And, I'd say they both squat a decent amount.
I never had a strict muscle up, only kipping, but I easily did a legless rope climb last weekend weighing a good 20 lbs more than I did the last time I tried one.
Strong is strong. I don't see how upper body strength and skinny legs are related.
Yeah, a big reason that gymnasts decide to do gymnastics past the little tiny kids level is that they naturally have a good strength-to-weight ratio to start with. So it doesn't surprise me that a guy who's still bothering to do gymnastics as a teenager might pull a bunch of weight without training the deadlift and without having big legs.
If she can perform strict ones, props to her. She's the only person I've heard of or seen who can with a hefty lower body.
Having a mammoth ass and legs does not make your upper body LESS strong though. If you weigh more, it just takes more strength to move your body. This should be perfectly clear.
You need to get out more.
I love how when people on this board can't do something, they assume that it must be impossible. MAYBE SHE'S JUICING!
Some people just win at life more, and some people just suck at life more. Choose wisely.
