There's no need to break it except maybe to fit it into your container. I tends to crumble with use and eventually you just use the leftover powder but while the blocks are whole they are convenient for "painting" your hands.
Going to buy and use chalk for the first time.
Do you have to break the chalk blocks or just rub the block on your hands? I noticed a bunch of reviewers on Amazon say they crushed the blocks, but I thought they could just be rubbed on.
Didn't Rip address chalk in a video? I assume the managing calluses video? (I'm on a slow connection today and really didn't want to load a video for an hour if it wasn't in there.)

You will have no problem if you take a solid piece and rub it on your hand, it will apply just fine.
Since I workout at home and don't have to worry about the dust, I took a shoe box and crumbled up a few pieces into powder so I can just grab a handful and spread it on and be ready to go.
I crush up about half the block, so I have both the solid block and the powder.
I crush mine but I put it into a panty hose with a knot tied in it. I just squeeze it like a stress ball and Im ready to go. It helps keep the mess down.
I spent $10 on two blocks of chalk and it's lasted me like 8 months so far, not even close to being depleted yet. I just pinch part of the block in a bucket and rub my hands together/give it a clap, garage gym so I can make a mess.
My powerlifting club supplies these for free in containerrs, but some people feel they need to crush them to powder and this annoys the real powerlifters to no end.
