I was reading an article about squats on T-nation by a certain John Gaglione. The dude was hyuuge and looked like he knew what he talked about and then I saw that "squat" he did.

Now this is either a half squat , or my perception of legal powerlifting depth is totally wrong.

He even insists in his article that squatting deep is essential. Damn

Here's the thing with geared squats (if that is what he does). You really can't force yourself to hit depth with lighter weight. You just go as low as the suit allows and then come back up. If you try to go lower, your form will go to crap. When it gets to a heavy enough weight, hopefully you can hit parallel. :-)

What the hell does that have to do with anything? At all?

It's just good sense to do both of those things, particularly if you're getting used to new gear that could throw you out of your groove.

I think is weight is heavy enough there to chalk the back. That is just so the bar doesn't slip. Figure that is 6 plates on each side (hard to see) and a bigger power bar. That would be 595-600lbs.

Some of the gear is pretty wild. Stephanie has pretty much squatted in an old Frantz suit for years. She got a new Overkill suit, and she couldn't hit parallel with 600lbs. Her best raw squat to good depth was around 450 at 165lb BW. She would need 700+ just to get down there... wild! :-)

I think the issue is more that he posted it in his article as an example of a proper "deep" squat. It's not just some random training video.

To be fair, what he said was:

The other matter is squat depth. You don't need to squat butt to calves to reap the benefits of size or strength. Go as low as you can while maintaining solid form. As your technique, mobility, and stability improves, feel free to squat down lower.
