Hey Dave,
I like the way you formulated your goals - simple, straightforward, and easily adjustable. What was the source of your x2, x3, x4, x5 formula? It would be good to have general "balanced athlete" proportional strength ratios that one could use to track progress. So, using 100lbs as the multiplier, a balanced lifter could Press 200, Bench 300, Squat 400, and Deadlift 500. I could use 60lbs, set my goal to Press 120, Bench 180, Squat 240 and Deadlift 300. Then I could see that my current Bench of 185 is disproportionate to my Deadlift of 265 and adjust my program to have Deadlift catch up to the "ideal" or "balanced" level of 300. That would be motivating for me. Different sports would likely need different proportions (wrestlers =/= pole vaulters), but for me, a geezer looking for balanced strength for optimal health and sustained mobility, your 2,3,4,5 metric might be the way to go. Seems like this idea of proportional strength would be widely considered, is it?
I like the notion, too. I've been using Kilgore Strength levels for my age and weight as targets, but I'm going to hits my initial goals (advanced strength levels) fairly soon.
Those levels are 100, 170, 220, and 260. So 150, 200, 250, and 300 seems like a possible next goal.
Clever! I'm very motivated by goals and interested to see what everyone is working toward. I just hit my first goal - 1000 lbs total by my 50th birthday (started SS at 47 and half-ton/half-century seemed doable). Now I'm contemplating the next one. 300/350/400 seems too close.
Aren't you already 68?
I know. I can't remember what I had for breakfast, either. ;^)
I'm six months shy of that lofty goal.
As of 6/30
Squat 205
Press 100
Bench 150
DL 245
I am 53 now. 6' 3", BW 108 kg/238 lbs.
Since December 2012, I trained with dumpbells, cable rows, cable tricep pushdowns, and lat-pulls. No lower body exercises.
Beginning of Juli 2013 I started a barbell program that had me do the big lifts 3x8-12. Can't remember what my starting weights were.
Then I discovered starting strength.
Squat 3x5 105 - 130 kg (deload to 120 kg on 05/08/2014)
Press 3x5 42.5 - 60 kg
Bench 3x5 82.5 - 105 kg
Deadlift 1x5 120 kg - 160 kg (deload to 120 kg on 04/15/2014)
12/31/2013 I set my goals for 2014:
Squat 3x5 150 kg
Press 3x5 80 kg
Bench 3x5 110 kg
Deadlift 1x5 180 kg
Yesterday I finnished my 5th week on Texas Method. Current Lifts are:
Squat 5RM 137.5 kg (303 lbs)
Press 5RM 67.5 kg (149 lbs)
Bench 5RM 112.5 kg (248 lbs)
Deadlift 5RM 157.5 kg (347 lbs)
Very happy with the Texas Method I am not setting new goals for the year. Just keep plugging away and take the results as they come
Various health problems have become very managable due to starting to lift and a more active lifestyle.
