If you want to achieve enlightenment by downgrading your standard of living, may I suggest backpacking? Enjoy the tranquility of nature while shitting outside after a grueling march of several days, and if it's not for you at least you know it's temporary until you get back home to your warm comfy toilet and bed which would then seem like a luxury.

Growing up, me and my brother would spend the summer in the mountains of North Carolina with our Dad. He made a DIY spring but when it didnt rain much there wasn't much water. Showers were either timed (less than 2 min) or were taken at the town pool. Peeing was done off the back deck or in the woods. The outhouse was a scary place. The spiders and stench were bad enough during the day. But at night, with nothing more than a flashlight? The stuff nightmares are made of. Luckily it didn't get dark until 9pm or so. It only took one or two times to learn to go #2 before nightfall.
