Gym Dogs | Mark Rippetoe

I think that people who train are fond of dogs, and I think that people who train other people especially like dogs, so it's no surprise to me that many of our Starting Strength Gyms have a dog or two on the payroll.

We became "dog people" a year ago. Our dog Archie seems to be happy watching any of us work out in the basement gym. We had a diabetic cat, also named Phoebe, who in her late stages of life, used to piss on the gym floor, which I didn't appreciate. She did incentivize me to create plate racks for my smaller plates so that she couldn't piss on them, too. Dog piss is no fun, but cat piss smells much worse, especially when your cat is diabetic. Phoebe is gone, and although we miss her, we don't miss her mess.

I really can’t imagine my life without dogs. I have eight of them at the moment, four mutts (that are rescues) and four bird dogs I hunt with. I’m 73 and have had dogs since I was 7. No human is a better friend, dogs give unconditional love everyday of their too short lives.
