A lot of other things have kept me from checking in on Jujitsu via Zoom. Today's session started off with combinations of throws, using a foot sweep to set up for a hip, shoulder, or leg throw. Not too much of a change from what I did in Judo in college. A key difference was in how to counter some of the throws. One was a standing choke that dropped the opponent in a few seconds.
Then some drills using the knife alternately in attack and in defense. This was followed by some similar drills with the baton also in attack and in defense. My own opinion for some time is that the best and maybe only safe and sure defenses against a knife is to run away or use a club, staff, or something like a garbage can lid to physically block or intercept the blade. Sure, there are some empty hand techniques, and they can work, but you are still likely to get cut at least a little.
We finished with some arm bar counters to attempted throws and some ground scuffling that results in a locked or broken elbow for the attacker.

Working with Special Olympians today on the other event I coach, shotput. Team Ohana has 4 of them, two men and two women. One each is new to the event and the woman sends the shotput flying way out there. Unfortunately she throws it like a softball which will get her disqualified and probably injured if she persists in doing it. The man has a similar issue, although he does manage to keep the movement closer to the explosive shove that should be used in this field event. I have some work ahead of me with them.

Dang!
Yes we did. Good to hear from you again. What's up with you these days?
I recommend staying away from the Covid thread up top. It's like Howard Hughes with a strong whiff of Jonestown there.
