Default Advice on power rack that not bolted to ground

    Hi Starting Strength Community,

I am looking for advice from those that have used a power rack not mounted to the ground or a platform.

I ideally want a rack that I can:
    - Not bolt down
    - is deep enough to squat inside and warm up bench or press during the rest in the outside
    - is 30” deep enough?
    - less than $1100
    - stable enough to do silly CrossFit kipping from time to time.

    Reason for constraints:
    - moved into Dad’s come to care for him after back surgery. So no bolting to the floor and wall mounted racks only have only one set of uprights
    - cannot build a platform because my dad will trip on the uneven ground. I have horse stall mats cover the garage floor
    - not sure if a 30” inside depth is enough to squat and bench with st the same time. Almost all of the flat foot power racks are 30” deep
    - trying to find a good long term investment

I think TSS will make you a 30" deep SS rack if you ask them.

Is 30” deep enough to both squat and bench out of the same rack? Thank you

It will be, yes. We're changing the SS Gym rack design for this reason.

Thanks Rip. Always enjoy your matter of fact style, even if the haters don’t.

Rip - how's the design changing, just making them deeper? Also - I noticed that the hole spacing on the SS racks in recent SS Gym photos appears closer than that in the blue book designs. True?

To VanillaRed, I use the Rogue R-3. It has a 24" inner depth and is plenty of room for me to squat and bench in. It requires bolting down, so not an option for you, but I'd think you could go for something like the Rogue RML-390F (flat-footed version of the RML-390) which is, I believe, 30" deep inside.

The only change will be the 30-inch depth. The holes in the new version are closer than in the book plans.

    Hi Mark,

I also want a rack that I can squat and bench out of and I also can't have a platform (I don't have room in my apartment).

I'd like to buy the Starting Strength rack on the TSS website. Before I spend $1K I want to make sure I'm getting this right. Is it the new version that will meet my needs or should I ask TSS to change the depth?

    Thanks,
    David
