I don't think Rip has truly won the war on the terminology for the press. It will be the "shoulder press" or the "overhead press/OHP" or god forbid, the "military press" for the foreseeable outside these ivy covered walls for some time, I fear.

We just call it the "press" here, as is the older tradition. The Blue Book has the germane, and quite interesting, discussion of the etymology of the press. "Pressing" refers to any lift where the weight is moved up by extension of the arm away from the body (distinguishing it from "pulling" after the intuitive way those terms are used). A "press" is such a movement done in its most basic form, using only the lifter's body and possibly an initial movement to get it into position (i.e., the contortion in the "bent press" or the pull, either "clean" or "continental"). Variations (such as doing it aided by the bench, or a push from the hips) are then appended to the initial term. Even more pedantically, the "press" as we know it now is the "two hand press," a relic from the transition from physical culturists and strongmen, whose idea of "pressing" mean moving the weight with one hand (see the old pictures of strongmen lofting kettlebells or barbells over their head like Greco-Roman statues), to competitive strength sports, whose aim was greatest weight lifted, not spectacle and entertainment.
