It's been mentioned several times and I declare Manhunter a near perfect film in terms of grabbing the viewer and taking him/her in. Just re-watched the director's cut and it still holds on. I can't say how it differs from the "original" cut; I don't think I have seen the original in decades so I won't comment on which is better.

The other "Lector" films are silly. This shouldn't be compared to them.

Maybe a nit to pick here or there but it is truly a mesmerizing film: story-wise, visually, technically, and musically. It's simply a pleasure to watch every few years.

If you are looking for something to watch one night, turn off the lights and the damned phone and give this a watch.

I have a golden evening tomorrow (the wife is taking the kids to the in laws) and am planning a movie double feature. I’m going to see if the above is on any of my streaming services. Any alternative recommendations for some violence and/or comedy most welcome. Porn is already taken care of thanks

If I were you, I'd go with Victor Victoria and Silverado.

It was on amazon last week when I viewed it (no charge for prime, I think...). Like you, wife was gone and I took advantage; this one spooks her. Dredd is another sleeper; excellent for when you're in a grumpy mood. Enjoy!

Rip, have you ever watched those old Kurosawa samurai movies like Seven Samurai or Yojimbo? If so, did you enjoy them and have anything in particular to say about them?

I've watched them all. You should too.

They're playing Seven Samurai in a 4k restoration in a theater near me to celebrate its 70th anniversary. I'm planning on going to see it tomorrow!

Bone Tomahawk for your next one. Western, Kurt Russell, comedy, disturbing gore/horror, genuinely scary antagonists. Might exceed the "some" violence threshold though.

Yeah, Silverado is fantastic, but I have to disagree about the best quote from it. “ 5 against 1? Doesn’t seem fair.” “ Which way do ya mean?”.

Rip, how accurately did No Country for Old Men capture the look and feel of late 70s/early 80s West Texas?
