This is my first article for Starting Strength, actually the first time I wrote anything for a public forum.
I am nervous but excited to see the comments. The story is a little personal, but it shows how important strength is. What’s great about Starting Strength is that none of us train for vanity, only to get stronger. But why do we want to get stronger? We all have our reasons. This article was my attempt to explain why strength is so important in my daily life. And I wanted to contribute to Starting Strength, there have been so many exceptionally well written articles by some very smart writers that I have learned from. The least I can do is try to give back.

What Coach Rippetoe said. And he has also said in other posts "you're a good son"

I wish I knew 10 years ago what I know now about strength. Because if I did my 84 year old mothers life would be a hell of a lot better now. Awesome article.

    Hey Tom,

Great article - well written and impactful. Strength in everyday life has so much meaning and value beyond what many realize.

Thanks - and now I know what my most important lift was. I suspect there will be others!

Thank you Tom, that was a compelling and well written story.

I started my journey much closer to being the one on the floor. I was using two canes, and looking at walkers because I knew needing one was inevitable.

With great strength comes great responsibility. This is especially true as we get older, and our relatives and friends wander into the Sick Aging Phenotype.

I consider it a privilege to be strong enough to help now, because for a long time I wasn't. The Sick Aging Phenotype is no way to go through life.

A really inspiring article, and really well written in my humble opinion.
