Yes, Vance was one of Thiel’s students and protégés. He ghostwrote Thiel’s book. He invested in his early businesses.

Vance represents what we hope to be a group of elites that are positioning themselves to displace the current elites. They have a lot of money. They care intensely about competency. They might not be “our guys,” but they do not loathe us on an existential level. If we believe the chatter, some are very much “our guys,” despite the cultural and political milieu they normally do business in. We know this because Trump didn’t go with Rubio or some other scumbag that really is compromised and beholden to entrenched interests. The only other signaling pick in this direction would have been Ramaswammy.

One of the more plausible ideas is that the selection of Vance, spurred on by Musk and Carlson following the assassination attempt, was for the purpose of putting someone absolutely opposed to the managerial class in charge of staffing for the Executive, which is part of what the VP does. Pence wasn’t going to do that; he was the “adult in the room” like Bush, Sr. was, remember?

Is Vance perfect? Far from it. But, do the friend/enemy calculus again and see how it shakes out.

I was unaware of the ghostwriting of any books; other than that, we have a similar surface-level understanding of the situation.
I am not confident we really know who Vance represents; I suspect he may be the candidate who was seen as an acceptable compromise between several groups and interests.

I still support Trump; I am not certain he alone can fix the problems we need fixed.

I don't think he can, but nobody could. This time he will have to surround himself with honest competent people, and actually listen to their advice. Whether he can do that or not is the actual question.

One of the funniest things about libertarians is their rhetoric that if there were freedom of association and free markets, segregation would never happen because businesses would lose customers. Is this some kind of joke? It's hilarious to me that people still believe this. If we had such freedoms, segregation would almost certainly be one of the most immediate effects. And everybody would be happier for it. Not equal, mind you, but happier nonetheless.

I'm not sure that an honest, competent person willing to call politics a career isn't purely mythical. I wonder if our society is still capable of providing those in sufficient number outside politics. I think we have to plow the field with the oxen we have.

Don't be pithy, Yngvi. Of course immigration policy is important. It was just much more important before there were 30 million plus already here, and we weren't facing the largest logistical problem in human history on how to get them back to their origin countries. Nevermind that removing them all too rapidly would cause a near instant collapse of agricultural production and processing that would starve hundreds of millions of people.

I'm not even advocating for amnesty. I'm just pointing out it's a little late to worry about it today. At the very least it's a problem that would take decades to "fix" even if you could drop the influx to zero fight now, and, if America has proved one thing repeatedly and consistently, it's that we can't be counted on to do anything past the next election cycle or two.

He has plenty of competent people, the problem is they may not like the autocratic way he will govern the US, and he will turn your justice department on its head.
