Arla foods is a huge producer of dairy here in the UK. They have recently added Bovaer to cattle feed which supposedly lowers methane emissions by 30%. I won't be buying any Arla products to not feed the climate change agenda but does anyone have any thoughts on the safety of the additive?
Boy, it's sure a good thing that the Science is settled on this.

This is a very good question indeed, please allow me to rephrase it: which body/individual/organisation would you trust to tell you that the additive is completely safe and harmless?

Coles is also doing that here in Aus (And probably Woolworths)
Doesn't the data sheet for the base product states outright that it causes fertility issues and shouldn't be taken by humans?

Fishing expedition, if you have the time - pubmed. A couple of the papers' authors decided to also feed the cows seed oils (canola, cottonseed), but it wasn't clear to me why - supposedly trying to further reduce methane production...or just to further poison the cow, dunno.

This one from Food Safety Commission of Japan says they tested on a range of animals, mostly rats. Rats aren't humans or cows, but this doesn't sound good -
The following results were observed in the subacute toxicity study, 1) Decrease in the absolute and relative weights of male testis and epididymis, 2) Decrease in sperm counts, 3) Decrease in the motor activity of the sperm.
I only skimmed this letter from the FDA (Centre for Veterinary Medicine), but it sounds like they are being conveniently lenient and waving it through for use without 'approval' as a drug.

The attachment to the letter has some concerning warnings in it, e.g.
Not for human use. Caution should be exercised when handling this product. 3-nitrooxypropanol may damage male fertility and reproductive organs, is potentially harmful when inhaled, and is a skin and eye irritant. Personal protective gear, including eye wear, a dust mask, and impervious gloves, should be worn when handling this product. Operators should wash hands after handling. If accidental eye exposure occurs, rinse eyes thoroughly with water. The safety data sheet contains more detailed occupational safety information
Like a lot of things, common sense should prevail here, but it won't unless consumers demand it.

    1. DSM-Firmenich's largest shareholder is Black Rock. 2. Doing agriculture correctly sequesters carbon. Why should you reward lazy ag practices rather than support farmers and ranchers who do it right?
Like so many things, we probably won't know how safe or not this stuff is for years down the road. But why chance it? I mean, the track record isnt great. Covid vaccine, Tylenol, Phen Fin, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil.........

Yes. It shouldn't be touched or consumed. So the farmers have to wear PPE. Good news is that magically it is rendered safe once it goes through the cow into our meat or milk.
