I truly enjoyed this essay.
That said, I sort of disagree with this. I agree with his overall point but I also think that you can white-knuckle it and you ought to be prepared to do so on occasion. Life is gonna kick you in the balls. Probably more than once. At least one of those times you're gonna lose your rudder. You're going to have to make it through some period of ambiguous, directionless blindness. Sometimes for a long time. So be able to white-knuckle it.
I hope a bunch of folks who don't realize how profoundly lifting contributes to an improvement in the state of mind and sense of self read this essay. Everything changes when you get under the bar and Zach put that idea into words nicely.
