Yikes, that's an alarming article, and the comments even more so.

I haven't been to a doctor in 5 years, haven't been to a dentist in 10 years; no issues, no expenses. Strength training and good nutrition seems to work pretty well so far.

I did finally go to the eye doctor today because my vision has gone to crap. Been 6 years since going to one of those crooked private equity owned abominations of a service industry.

Walked out of there with $500 less in my pocket.

Not yet, but looking forward to hopefully being able to drive at night again after the glasses arrive. I put it off for a long time due to cost, but it got too bad to ignore any longer.

The insurance company contract with the hospital, medical chain or individual physician prohibits any disclosure of what is the payment for anything. Suppose you have a plan that's supposed to pay 80% of the cost of something. The hospital sends a bill for $10,000. You're supposed to pay $2,000. The hospital actually has a deal with your insurance company to be paid $700 for that service. This outright fraud has been going on for decades now, and doesn't come to light because insurance payments are kept secret.

This is also why no doctor can tell you what you can expect to pay.
