    Hi Robert,

    Age: 47
    Height: 5' 8.5"
Weight: 250 after 16 lb weight loss the past 10 weeks. Busted my ass with cardio and lifting twice a week.
Stage 4 Grade 2 Indolent B cell cancer survivor (years of tough chemo has screwed up my body (kept me alive so I am ok with it)
I have had NASH and Pancreatitis (so much for dark stout beer anymore) the past year plus.
Waist: is around 40/41 and shrinking with habit changes.

Sort of running a NLP A/B split 2-3 days a week along with Cardio (Echo bike, rowing machine, some running (ex-marathoner that can't quit)) to keep strength while trying to get the weight down.

Current heavy lifts on a good day
    Squat: 405
    DL: 405
OHP: 135 (shoulders always sore from rock climbing and abuse)
BP: 260 (depending on shoulder pain that day)

Long and short, I am looking for your thoughts on losing the weight, keeping some strength but more importantly keeping the Liver and NASH under control as that is some terrible pain and suffering when it occurs. I am ok with losing some strength while losing the weight to keep my organs healthy and working correctly. I have cut allot of fats but I am finding so much conflicting information on the web about correct diet for NASH and Pancreatitis. Some say to get rid of carbs all together some say no meat etc. . . (drives me crazy). Any insight you can offer would be awesome.

Thanks Robert! you da man, I loved your podcast with BB Logic and AOM. Very simple and easy to understand.

Thanks for posting buddy! Sorry to hear you got a couple kicks in the ass there. Glad to know you are remaining productive in the gym. So if you think about non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) for what it is the solution is rather simple. The issue is you have circulating triglycerides storing in the liver. So where are the triglycerides coming from? Your food, which in this case would be fats and sugar. So if you’re going to eat meat, stick to lean or extra lean and lay off the concentrated sweets. The fat will be key though because fat is already in the form that it’s stored in so it’s much more efficient for the human body to store it ecotpically on the liver in this case.

Ps - what is the story with your deadlift??

Thanks for the Reply Robert! Your answer makes sense and like I said, you make it simple to understand. Just a small follow up question, "Would I need to be careful with processed Carbs as well?" I am trying to eat more lean meats, vegetables and carbs that come from the Earth such as Sweet Potatoes rather than processed boxed stuff unless its like Mission Carb control fiber wraps or bran buds in yogurt . . . (thank you BB Logic podcast!)

To answer your deadlift question, I am sensing it should be higher for my weight and height. To be honest I love Squats and absolutely hate the Deadlift. I actually dread deadlifting. I never feel comfortable in the hole for setup. I plan on finally going to a seminar this year and I am hoping that will help straighten it out and get it up to what it should be. I got 525 when I was trying to get real strong right before my meniscus surgery over a year ago, however it was on a HEX bar so don't tell RIP.

Thanks again Robert your doing a great job running the nutrition forum!

You are very welcome buddy! Thanks for the kind words as well.

Your intuition is in line with mine. Processed carbohydrates often contain high amounts of sucrose and high fructose corn syrup. Excess amounts of fructose can be used to form fatty acids, which can then be used to form triglycerides, which can be stored as fat and/or circulate in the blood. Now before this is taken out of context, let's be clear on one thing. Fructose from fruit is unlikely to do this unless you eat pounds upon pounds of it. You'll get full or end up in the pot before you overconsume fructose from fruit. However, drinking several liters of Coca Cola or eating bags of candy is more likely to make this happen. The short of it is if you are trying to manage triglyceride and prevent fat accumulation both ectopically (stored in places it shouldn't be eg the liver) or in adipose tissue, then you should very well limit refined sugars from your diet and stick the items you listed :-).

Deadlift - If you want to build a big muscular upper body, you gotta get your deadlift up man. The squat won't do it so commit the time and effort to mastering it and getting it to 500. You will thank me later.

Thanks again Robert! I will definitely give it more time on the Deadlift. I will let you know down the road how things progress changing my eating habits and working on the basic lifts all the while slowly losing fat and changing my body composition to get even stronger.
