Hello Robert,
I thoroughly enjoyed your latest episode (#72); I think this is my favourite so far. I could relate to a lot of the issues you described in there, and I think it will help me with my future programming.
I have been lifting for over 3 years and keep running into the same wall. The squat is my strongest movement and I have repeatedly been able to bring it in the high 230s for 2X3. At that point though my 5X5 are in the low 200s and start crushing me: my poverty deadlift become ever poorer, and I end up having to de-load due to hip pain, which I have come to interpret as a signal that I am doing too much.
I should probably mention that I am a 42 year old female standing at almost 5'1'' and 125 lbs.
Anyhow, a thing I have found difficult while doing this is that, as I listen to your content, to Andy's and to SS Radio, you guys make a distinction between "strong" lifters and not-so-strong lifters. It is quite obvious what you mean for the average man, but for someone like me, it hasn't been so clear. In this week's episode (around 40:00), you talk about a hypothetical guy squatting 430X5, 435X5 and 440X5, and then about a hypothetical gal doing 135X5, 140X5 and 145X5 and compare her to your "small-to-medium people out there that aren't lifting these massive numbers". This struck me because I am definitely one of those small people, so I guess I need to start thinking of myself as a "strong" lifter for programming purposes.
I am using my most recent squat de-load as an opportunity to focus on my poverty deadlift but I am looking forward to focusing on the squat again with the insight from your podcast in mind. Thank you so much for all the helpful advice, and please keep up the great work you are doing with this podcast.
