How do I tell the difference between bumper plates and standard rubber coated plates? I'm looking at some second hand bumpers but I have never used or even seen bumper plates before.

Try to do a power clean. If you can't do it, then they're not bumpers.

For most bumpers the 45s are going to be 3-4inches thick. So twice as wide as a plain metal plates or rubber coated metal 45lbs plate.

Like you see in fine CF videos everywhere: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ClMGrFvOfTM

This doesn't apply to fancy Eleikos (and maybe some other brands) that have a steel hub

edit: Yeah or you can do the PC test. ... if you're brave enough.

I believe what you are referring to was something called sarcasm. Quite subtle, but very entertaining.

Even a steel hubbed eleiko is much thicker than a rubber coated steel plate.

Could somebody please refer to SOMETHING?!? This lack of referral is getting rather confusing.
