Thanks Andy. I basically do a 2 week version of this and the article gives me a pretty good insight into my next program.

You are proving to have an uncanny knack for writing articles that say exactly what I need to hear, just when I need to hear it. Thanks, Andy.

I'm curious how you choose the weights for each rep scheme and how do the increases work?

Nice article. Have to agree about 5/3/1...it worked ok for presses but my squats suffered big time when I ran it.

me too. also, how to adjust the weight when going from singles back to 5s. do you just go for 5lbs over where the last set of 5s left off, or should you be more aggressive?

Thanks Andy, I only do 5's, 3's, 2's, and 1's. Never thought of throwing 8's into the mix, I may give that a try and see how I do.

Yes, each rep range operates independently of the others. Your 5s progress based on your last set of 5, not your singles, etc. Starting weights are estimated based off your recent training history. There is not necessarily a "formula"

Andy, thank you for this write up. I have been running 531 all year and have been pondering best ways to modify it to get more volume at least in squats and DL.
For females would you recommend 5 (or more) sets of 3 on the 5 week, and then do 3-5 sets of 3 on the 3 week?
