Search fail. The "Advanced Search" item on the forum doesn't work well, does it?

Here's how to actually search the forum:
    1) go to google.com
    2) type this into the search window: site:startingstrength.com clean alternatives

Here's the relevant currently active thread on exactly this subject: http://startingstrength.com/resource...ad.php?t=53668

I dunno where you've got idea that back extensions are any substitute for Cleans. Not in SS, for sure. For one, in SS PC is primary exercise, while back extension is an assistance one, so you are not supposed to do one instead of another.

AFAICT, Rip himself only mentions BB Power Snatches as alternative for Cleans in SS:BBT3. By similarity, BB high pulls, DB high pulls and shatches, KB cleans, snatches and swings could also be suggested. I.e., it should be some loadable explosive full-body movement.

Here is quote for you from SS:BBT3:

"First, barbell rows are not a substitute for power cleans. If you use them for this purpose,
you have decided to omit a more important exercise in favor of an assistance exercise, an easier
movement that does not provide most of the benefits of the more important basic exercise."

    Case closed.

You're > 50, can you handle Power Cleans? If not, who cares. Plenty of really strong people here don't do their power cleans. If you need programming/lift alternatives I'd ask Andy in his programming section.

I personally do them on GPP days for fun. They are nowhere near a rep max as I don't rely on them for additional pulling volume. cwd made a valid point in the thread linked. If you're power clean is too low they won't help drive anything. You'd be better off with some sort of meaningful assistance exercise.

There are no substitutions for lifts. If you can't or don't want to do a lift and are looking to fill space in your program you need to ask yourself what you want to accomplish and find a lift that will accomplish that goal.

    Default Alternatives to Back Extensions

Sorry, too many topics mixing around in my head.

In the programming portion of SS, one of the exercises is Back Extensions.
My gym doesn't have a Roman Chair.
Is anyone else in this situation, and if so, how are you handling it?

I seem to get a 500 every other time I search. But in the spirit of SS I will search harder!

    I don't do them.
