    Default DIY chin up belt options

    • starting strength seminar october 2024
    • starting strength seminar december 2024
    • starting strength seminar february 2025
    I'd like to start weighting my chins again. My gym used to have a bit of nylon webbing lying around, but it seems to have disappeared. So I'm looking at DIY options.

    The simplest option seems to be some chain and a carabiner. I don't know much about chain; is there any specific kind I should be looking for? Or would some sort of rope work better?

    I was also considering hanging the chain/rope from my belt; this might be more comfortable when the weight gets heavier. Has anyone tried this? I'm wondering whether this might damage the belt. (It's a normal 4" powerlifting belt). I think I tried something like this once with my old velcro belt, but that was with just 25lb.

    Thoughts? Other DIY options? I know I could just order an actual dipping belt for 20 or 30 bucks, but I'm cheap.

    If you go chain get some foam to put around it especially on the hips, getting pinched with 40+ on the chain hurts really bad.

    Chain works fine. You get used to it.

    I made this one, goes hard, put 80KG on it, no pain at all.

    Get a carabiner that fits into your chain EASY, or loading/unloading can be tedious like my dumb ass found out.

    I just use a piece of climbing rope and tie it around the weights..granted if I had to buy it I'd have gone chain, but a lot of people have sturdy rope sitting around.plus no pain from the rope lol.

    I use one of those cheap bicycle cable locks (since I have a few of them anyway) and stick a caribiner through the loops.

    It is cheaper and better than the rosstraining idea, with chain etc. Just buy the cable for about $8 and a caribiner, then you have a belt which can handle something in the order of 200kg I would imagine, maybe more. I have seen this kinds of cables used as winch on rescue vehicles.

    That seems like a good option. But I went ahead and got some chain and a carabiner, rated to 160lb.
