Steve Redgrave was one of the greatest oarsmen of modern times. The irony of this comment in a sporting biography of Jurgen Grobler, the East German coach who migrated to England after the Berlin Wall came down, could only be appreciated on this forum:

"The squad entered its final year of preparation for the 2000 Sydney Olympics with uncertainty over seats . . . In January Redgrave suffered a minor fracture of his arm when he fell off a medicine ball in the gym". . . (Matheson & Dodd, "More Power", Harper Collins 2018).

Fell off a medicine ball? Grobler was an exercise scientist who graduated from the University of Leipzig and was brilliant at analyzing past Olympic performances and prescribing incremental training programs necessary to win the next one. He is still the national rowing coach of Great Britain in his 70s. The book doesnt say whether he lifts, but it is an important part of the programs he designs for his oarsmen (and women), despite the dangers of medicine balls.

Why is it called a medicine ball when a doctor never prescribes you take any amount of it?
