At what point does running start to become catabolic?

If one goes out and runs an all-out mile as a high-intensity workout and the effort lasts for say, 6-7 minutes, maximum... That shouldn't end up being very catabolic, would it?

Tweak are you just fucking bored? Why aren't you out chasing tail or drunk-skiing?

The legend does have a point, tweak. Imbibing and fornicating. Doesn't get much better than that.

It's not that running a mile is catabolic so much, but rather that running has a strong eccentric component, which will interfere with recovery. I was even told by the Feigenbaum sledgehammer swings and tire flips will interfere with the gainzzz. Hill sprints aren't as bad, though the standard prescription is prowler push/pull/drag.

Tom C once told me, "Real men don't run ... unless they're being chased by a bonersaurs. Then run like hell."

I think about Tom's advice everyday.

Technically it is catabolic the very second you start. On the other hand so is lifting weights. Anabolism happens during recovery -- from both.

The question I'd imagine comes down to your training goals and how they compete.

I can tell you that I swam (usually about 1500 yards) 4 days a week and lifted on a 4-day split all of last summer. I didn't make much progress on my lifts at the time. On the other hand I dropped some fat and I felt great. If my priority had been getting my squat higher then the swimming would have had to go.

If I may suggest, not waiting for the vegas trip to commence both? It's good to get a nice base on, both tail and drinks-wise, so as not to be overwhelmed with the free booze and added oxygen in the casinos. A nice, linear progression. I always start with 2's and work my way up.

The people in the Los Angeles hills sing a folk song about Paul Horn for a reason, ladies and gentlemen.
