My university's gym has this barbell and I don't know what it's for. I've looked up specialty bars online a few times but I have never seen this one on any list.
I've never seen anyone use it either. I'm mostly just curious and annoyed I haven't figured it out yet. Any idea what this barbell is called?

Honestly, it looks like it went to a machine of some kind. I can't think of anything that resembles that.

I think I know this - the top handles are for pulling from a deficit

I think those are extended handles for grabbing during a squat. For stiff-shouldered dudes.

Might be. Wouldn't work for low-bar though.

Oh one thing I forgot to mention is the handles that stick out don't have any knurling on them. I thought maybe it was getting a higher starting position on the dead lift originally, but the knurling is only on the main piece on the bar, so that option is probably out. It could like Cody said and be part of an old machine, they swapped out all the equipment like a year ago and added more power racks, a bunch of Olympic rubber plates, and benches and like 40 new machines, so it could just be left over from something.

Part of a leg press machine? It doesn't look very long.

I should have laid something next to it for scale, but it's about the same length as a trap deadlift bar (or hex bar?)

It looks like the thing that is at two gyms round here. Used with a high flat bench you can do rows with it.
