I don't know that a novice needs a belt. But if he does, he needs a thinner one.
I have a 10mm thick, 4" belt from elitefts. It is a good belt, but I don't know if it is an appropriate belt as a novice. I used to squat from 195-260 lbs, pathetic, I know. I also have used it for the press at 115 lbs. I was thinking of getting a thinner leather belt like this:

Is a thin belt like this more appropriate for a novice?

I use a belt due to my scoliosis. I treat it as a "chronic back injury".
That's fine, but you'll have to get one that actually fits the contours of your back, and a 10mm competition belt is not designed to do that.
A competitor in suit and wraps.
I was wrong about the current belt I own from elitefts. It is a 13mm. While looking on their web site, they have created a thinner leather belt also. This one is 6.5mm thick.

I also called Titan Support Systems about their 4x4 Texas Power Belt, and their belt is 8mm thick. Obviously for a novice like myself, thinner would be better (not what she said...), but the 8mm Texas Power Belt is significantly cheaper. Would the 8mm be okay for me? Or should I dish out the extra dinero for a thinner belt?
