The lady who runs my gym is a professional powerlifter and has criticized my liberal use of chalk. She says that you should only use chalk when you are going for your heaviest lifts not every time at the gym, otherwise it acts as a crutch. I countered that the chalk prevents callous formation and tearing of the skin, she retorted that as weightlifter you want callouses and if people were tearing their skin from not using chalk the gym would be a bloody mess. Didn't really know how to reply.
I might do one "application" for warm-up sets, but I re-apply before every workset. I'm very liberal with my chalk use when I do presses and pulls, but I also workout in my basement so nobody is going to complain. Maybe clean up your area when you're done? If you clean up after yourself, why the heck would somebody care about how much chalk you use.

I'd snort the chalk if I thought it could help me lift more weight....
She's a CrossFitter, so her ideas don't matter. This is elementary.
You get enough callouses when using chalk. You know when I put on chalk? When my hands start getting sweaty. If that's on my first warmup set or if it's on my last workset, that's when I do it. In the winter, I might not use chalk at all.
EDIT: But, yeah, looking at that link, some people are real dickheads about putting on their chalk. Didn't notice the link posted was not the OP. In that case, whatevs.
