Anyone ever tear a muscle in the back?

Lifting a moderately heavy load (not maxing out or anything) one of the muscles in my lower back (in between the spine and the love handles) just popped on the way up. I felt the muscle go from extreme tightness (as all the muscles are in the squat) to immediately releasing during the pop. I assumed I simply tore it. I didn't drop the weight or anything. Just racked it walked over to get my keys to drive myself to the hospital, but by the time I got there I couldn't bend over without terrible pain.

I went to the ER and they did pretty much nothing for me other than giving me meds. They didn't even test the muscles to see which one was injured. And my shitty regular doctor isn't even in today, so I can't get an MRI until monday at the earliest.

Anyone have any experience with a similar injury? And is the Starr protocol still recommended?

I think the Starr rehab is only for muscle belly injuries. I would check with Rip, which im sure you will anyway.

I've no experience with tearing a muscle, but have herniated a disc at l5-s1. Try to confirm what happened before deciding on a treatment protocol, but NSAIDS and rest is probably all you need to worry about this weekend.

If you get pain or numbness anywhere below the waist from this it's not a muscle tear. If it is one, though, then the Starr rehab with deadlifts would probably help as the muscle repairs itself based on what I've read posted here. Rip has posted many times on this, so seaching for things like 'back' 'Starr' 'rehab' will surely bring up the posts.

hopefully getting an mri on monday. Getting a dr to see you the same day is nearly impossible. Half of the drs dont even work on fridays. When did that start?

Muscle tears usually involve bleeding and bruising. If it looks fine and isnt severely painful, they its probably not torn.

Dentists don't work Friday either...try getting an abscessed tooth on a Friday...

Unfortunately there won't be a quick fix, but you should probably be on prescription strength NSAIDS which is what I'd bet they gave you at the ER.

did you read my post...i couldnt bend over. When a muscle pops then loses all abiity to contract, it's probably a tear.

By your location, if it is indeed muscular, it could be the quadratus lumborum. Rip's argument that back muscles hardly if ever tear makes sense to me, muscle tears happen when muscles contract or extend quickly, the QL is pretty much in isometric contraction during pretty much all the lifts, so it would be very unlikely, theoretically.

I have no personal experience with muscle belly tears, but are they supposed to be THAT painful? I'm sure it's not a nice feeling, but I didn't think it hurt that bad.
