I thought some people here might find this interesting. Rip teaches a neutral cervical spine more or less for precisely the reasons that Kelly goes into here, but you'll notice a lot of people seem to have a problem keeping a stable head/neck position in lifts like the squat and (particularly) deadlift.

This is a pretty interesting entry on the topic, and he gives a pretty useful piece of advice I tried playing with - namely to think about pushing the tongue to the roof of the mouth to close the "circuit" (kinetic chain) anteriorly, which seems to keep the head/neck position more stable.
