Not sure if this has been posted already, but I've seen a couple of lifters reference this article, I believe Greg Nuckols being one of them.

    http://www.progressivefitness.net/bl...-abs-exercises

The author argues that squats & deadlfits are not effective exercises, and that 'concious co-activation of the trunk muscles during the squat exercise may lead to spinal instability and hazardous compression forces to the lumbar spine'.

Just wanted to share, but I, for one, am continue keeping my trunk tight during squats & deadlifts.

I'll rely on those more knowledgeable that I am to comment/discuss.

Yup- it's a few threads down: here.

I am indeed surprised that Greg endorsed it (it was on his 'top 5 fitness articles of the week'), but it parallels his model of the hamstrings in the squat (hamstring knee flexion opposes quadriceps knee extension, therefore we should minimize use of the hamstrings as much as possible).
