Not everyone follows a strict program as far as sets/reps, etc. The more advanced you get the more you can learn to go by feel and kinda auto-regulate training. That being said, most everyone at least follows a template of some kind. Complete randomness generally does not work

    People who follow programs:

Strong people, USAW athletes, all other serious athletes, pirates, ninjas, and bodybuilders

    People who don't follow programs:

The skinny-fat, the sedentary, the weak, Crossfitters

Which group do you want to be a part of, OP?

I guess it's not necessary, but it sure helps know if you're getting stronger or not.

It's rare to see anyone with more than one 20kg plate a side of the barbell on more than one exercise who does not have a programme. And those few who do achieve it tend to be males 18-25 who come in and max out all the time - for 2-3 years, then they get injured and never lift again.

In a recent interview, Andy said, "nobody gets strong by accident." You need a plan. That you even ask this question tells us you're not strong.

    starting strength coach development program
I know a couple of people that got pretty strong without a program, but they had youth and ego on their side, they just went into the gym every day with the attitude that they would lift more than everybody else and impress the ladies on the treadmills.
