Last week I was telling a friend about my 13-year old son's weight training progress. She cautioned that her daughter's gymnastics coach advised that kids should not weight train until 16 years old to avoid growth plate injuries. Seriously, the coach who has my friend's perpetually injured, 9 year old daughter flinging, contorting, lifting and slamming her body around for 15+ hours a week in competitive gymnastics believes that moving a bar through a natural range of motion in a controlled manner 3 days per week is far too risky an activity.

We have a long way to go. As I've mentioned before.

Full version is free and available here. Article is quite readable and straightforward; very accessible to the lay public. Print out copies for all your friends.

Likely to be covered in 2013 Science Review, and will be a candidate for 2015 SSCA Readings.

Nice find in a relatively obscure journal. Thanks.

This is a fun read; thanks to everyone involved in getting it into my hands.

I also like that overhead presses are categorized as a bodybuilding exercise.

Sometimes it feels like the early 1960's all over again on this subject.

I should have given credit to Mark Sisson (or one of his minions).

Probably couldn't get it into the high impact factor Ex-Phizz journals.

Common sense advices call for late inception of intense, strength training-related activities, like weight lifting and plyometrics, which are usually postponed at the end of the growth age, even among sport practitioners. However, such advices seem to have a mainly anecdotal nature.
