squat form check please
Tom
Please take a look at my squats. i'm trying to get feel for hip drive, and I think I am making some progress, but I would welcome any feedback from you or others with experience. I am 54 y.o. 182#. I have been lifting for two months now. I started with the empty bar and added weight 3 times/week every week. I was at 180# last week, but my form was terrible. I dropped the weight to 135# on Tuesday to work on my form. This video was yesterday at 140# it was my last set and I did 6 reps instead of because they felt pretty good. thoughts/tips ?
Thank you.

There are a number of things to correct here. I am going to give you a fair amount of cues, but I am going to leave out some others for simplicity.
You are on your toes and overextending your back quite a bit and squatting high. Your shoes are killing you here, too. You need to get some lifting shoes. Those squishy running shoes are about the worst choice you can make. Get the Rogue Do-Wins. Stop trying to arch your back and stay upright. Lean over early. Chin down. Chest down. Reach back with your hips on the descent. Drive your knees out more. Go deeper. Drive your butt up. On the ascent, stop trying to arch your back, too. Just keep your back in normal extension. Lastly, lose that mirror in front of you. It encourages all kinds of problems.

thanks Tom. I'll work on it tonite. I never really noticed the toe thing, but it's pretty obvious. good news is, I have coaching with SSC scheduled next Friday. Might need an hour and a half just on squat.
Thank you for your comments.

Enjoy the coaching session. I predict you will like the shoes, too. They sort out a lot of inconsistencies.

Hi Tom,
can you provide some details on why you recommend the Do-Win shoes?
I am also a 54 year old male doing NP and need to purchase shoes.....wondering if the Do-Win recommendation applies to all 50+ folks or something more specific to bremered?
thanks in advance,

I recommend the Do-Wins because they are $95 and have an incompressible heel and a metatarsal strap. They represent the best value in a weightlifting shoe on the market. I exclusively wore the predecessors to those shoes for the first few years of my lifting career. The Adidias Powerlift Trainers are cheaper, but have a semi-squishy EVA midsole. I don't like them much at all. In fact, I don't like any of the Adidas shoes very much. They are lasted quite narrowly, most of them are hellishly ugly, and they all have weird compromises and caveats. Their latest shoe has a fucking 1" heel. Bizarre engineering choices. My favorite shoes are the Nike Romaleo 2s. They are not made anymore. The Romaleo 3s look nice, but they are almost $200, so I don't recommend them to people off the bat. Once they have been lifting a while and are willing to pay more for a shoe, the Nikes await. Age is not a determining factor for shoe recommendations. How they fit and if they squish are important factors.
