I do 3x3 Front Squats on my light day.
When i was into TM i used them on my light day. They help build quadriceps strength, hit your core from a different angle than the back squat and i feel they are beneficial to the deadlift too, as does Brad Gillingham. They are also helpful in terms of the clean and any of its variations.
I do them, but I am running 531 right now. I use them DE style after my deadlifts.
I do! I think they are the most under-rated upper back builder EVER. Not to mention building your quads and such. Love them. Easy to train as well.
I've always liked front squats--no problems with or questions about the form. An honest lift. Easy to sense depth, and if you ever lose it, you know (and can see) just where the bar is going. I was never so fond of back squats. Nonetheless, I'm trying to follow the TM program as much as possible and back squat each workout.
One place to use front squats is on the light day, which is was Rip had in PPST1. However, he later changed his view, because they don't use the hamstrings like the back squat. This is laid out in detail in in his essay How I Learned to Squat and stop using the leg press.
I sometimes put in front squats on my Friday--after I've done my 1 x 5 back squat max--and work back up (w/the FS) in sets of three.
I just started front-squatting a month or so ago, along with snatching, and, any day now, C&J. I realized, after getting up to BW on the FS, that I really should've been mixing them in when I was doing SS. The ab and quad work is indeed quite different from, and seems as though it would be quite complementary to, the back squat, and probably other lifts as well. Programming was never my strong suit, and I never switched over to TM, so I dunno there. Listen to Marotta, 'cause he's the goddamn Canadian National Recordholder in the Underage Youth division or whatever he competes in. Strong fucker, is what matters there.
I don't compete so why back squat? I love front squatting.
