Default Hook grip on cleans and snatches

I've starting running the Nebraska Model as laid out in Practical Programming 3E. I just wanted an excuse to work more power snatches into my life.

I've ran into this in the past with power cleans. When I use a hook grip, my second metacarpal feels like it's going to snap in half. When I use a conventional grip, nothing.

Any clue what's causing this? Should I just use a conventional grip?

This is the bone that feels like it is going to snap in half?

That's a very strange place to experience pain due to the hook grip. If it does not get better, just use the conventional DOH grip.

Poggybacking on this, i met with an SSC who had me switch to hook grip for powercleans right off the bat. Any reason why this is the default grip for this stuff?

This is addressed in the book, but it allows for a strong grip while keeping the arms and hands reasonably relaxed. Try and power clean 100 kg without a hook grip and then try it with a standard DOH grip. Let me know what you prefer.

My second and third metacarpals get very sore when I am hook gripping a lot or coming back to hook grip after not doing it for a while. Using straps for some of my pulls and getting used to the frequency is what fixes it for me.

Tom - I am definitely over thinking this, but your blunt honesty will help. Could I be having a problem with the hook grip because my hands are not getting off of the bar when catching an racking the clean? Could the hook grip be causing my to hold on too long? If that makes any sense. I understand why the hook grip is important and think that it is necessary/helpful. I do not want to limit my progression because my delicate fingers are pussies.
