    Default Poor Bench Press?

    • starting strength seminar december 2024
    • starting strength seminar february 2025
    • starting strength seminar april 2025
    Sorry if this has been asked before, couldn't find anything in particular.

    I suck majorly at the bench press compared to the other lifts (taking into account that BP should be lower than the others). My numbers (converted from kg):

    19
    5'6
    136 lbs (started at 110 lbs... I was like the skinniest, weakest 19yo you'd ever seen)
    Squat 215 lbs 3*5
    Press 88 lbs 3*5
    Deadlift 259 lbs * 5
    Bench Press 110 lbs 3*5
    Chinups usually around 14/10/9

    Any reason why it would be so low in proportion to the others? I don't have a form video but I've taken some in the past and I believe it's reasonable. Have tried deloading and smaller increments (down to 1.25lb increments).

    P.S. I know I need to eat more and my weight is still increasing, just not fast enough to stop the bench constantly stalling.

    You should probably eat even more. I've gained 40 lbs (from 156-196 lbs) since January, and I'm still in single digit bodyfat. 5k-6k calories a day did the trick.

    Light body weight impacts the upper body lifts quite a bit. How long have you been on the program?

    Also, post a form check video of your bench. Let the coaches rip it apart.

    Also ... That seems like a lot of chins for a dude with lifts as light as yours. Something is off.

    Food, technique, rest...that's really it man.

    I suppose the possibility exists that you have a very unusual anthropomentry, but something like long arms would be A. noticeable and B. evident in your Press, too.

    So in the interest of avoiding an over-analysis, keep working hard in the gym and in the kitchen.

    The chins are legit. Not dead-hang but bouncing with full range of motion. First and last are dead-hang. I think the reason it seems off is probably because I'm 136 lbs so the lifts are expected to be lighter? I dunno

    Been on the program too long but being way too busy stopped me eating properly for months at a time. Always hit the gym 3 times a week though... Just thought if eating was the problem, the lifts would all be proportionately low and it wouldn't just be a really bad bench.

    Yeah I don't think it's long arms, in fact I struggle to reach the rack on the bench so I think I have short arms. And okay cool, just feels weird seeing teenagers come into the gym and start benching 135 lbs with ease for reps while I can get nowhere near that after training for months and gaining 25 lbs, trying deloads and micro-loading etc...

    Lots of people have a lift that lags behind. Keep eating, keep training, and treasure every pound of your bench press, since you earned it.

    now go earn some more.

    And sometimes the "weak" lift can become one of the strongest. AK, thinking back to my high school bro days, I also could not bench 135 right away. Eventually it came around though. Just keep eating and a form check might be in order too.
