Hard to say if you’d be leaving gains on the table or not. A 10% off set might be good, 5% might be better, it’ll depend on how much you’re benching and how efficient (and how male) you are. Try it and see how it goes.

I think that would be a fine alternative to using a modified version of the lift. You may have to get creative with set/rep schemes to keep progress going, but sticking to the main lifts can still drive lots of progress.
