My best press for a set of 5 is 65% of my best bench for a set of five. I'm a horrible overhead presser though.
Hello all, this is my first post here, hope it's not a dumb one.
Question to Rip. I understand the "order" of strength in the big 4.
Deadlift > Squat > Bench > Press
My question is, to be balanced, about how much stronger should my bench be than my press? Or to put it another way, what would be the ideal ratio between the two in your opinion. 50%? 2/3?
Thanks in advance. Big fan of SS, a fabulous read and it's changed my approach to working out forever!
Regards from Vancouver, Canada.

From personal experience:
Back squat is 80% of your deadlift
Front squat is 75% of your back squat
Bench is 80% of your back squat
Press is 2/3 or 67% of your bench
I'm right at .70 for both my current top singles and sets of five.
Press 5RM = 140
Bench 5RM = 200
P/B Ratio = 70%
2/3/4/5 for Press/Bench/Squat/Deadlift is a good rule of thumb.
a month in i deadlift 225
squat 210
bench press 110
overhead press 85
T-Nipple had an article on this in the last few weeks; bunch of different lifts compared.
You can always wank of with a calculator on the Kilgore standards for the lifts at various weights and stages.
But for you personally, the answer is gonna be pretty individual based on your anthropomorphy.
You want to have "balanced" development, then work them in a "balanced" way. Same number of sessions for each lift, same intensity of sets and reps. That'll make them as "balanced" as they're gonna get, given how your body is put together.
